Water Heater Install. I called around for a quote and Cahill was by far the cheapest (100s less than other places ). Some plumbing companies asked me questions such as how many stairs to water heater location, is it in a hard to reach area and so forth with it costing me more every time I answered yes. Cahill gave me a flat rate to replace my 21 yr old water heater.
They honored that quote but a rusted valve needed replacing so I did have to pay extra for the valve. The foreman and another employee came first thing in the morning, fixed everything fairly quickly and professionally. They never complained about the age of my water heater or rust or other things that occur with an old water heater. The only issue was the misinformation about payment.
The office said I can pay the following week when they mail my bill but the foreman wanted a check in hand right after the job was finished. I would recommend having a check ready with full payment the day of install. Quality of install was above board and I would highly recommend them to install big ticket items.

Excellent company but the rates they charge residential customers are too high. If you need a faucet changed or other relatively simple jobs like toilet replacement, go find another plumber or be prepared to drain your bank account. Too many good plumbers are charging sky high rates with Cahill leading the pack. That said, I use them regularly for other complex tasks which justifies their high rate.

Receiving a $684 bill for a "annual Turn-On/clean" service. When the technician arrived, he called me once to tell me what services he was completing. When I asked him what the total would be, he said he would call me back to discuss. I never hear from him again. I did call the same cell phone 8 different times with no answer. I then called the office and left several messages with the "accounting" department.
I did not receive a return call until almost 3 months later. Upon discussing the issue, they sent me a $689 bill. When I told them, that I never heard back, and had to hire another contractor to complete the work they supposably started. The company hired (invoice attached) did the entire job for $456.00, which included the same services that John J. Cahill was claiming.
I had used John J. Cahill's service prior, and did not run into any issues. I did have a discussion with the owner, and told him that his previous technicians were professional and finished the job with no issues. He stated, "Yeah, because of COVID, we've had issues finding good technicians, and I'm sorry that they never got back to you". That's great, but if that's the case, why am I still receiving a bill?
I even sent them the contractor (Deljo Heating and Repair) that did the job that they didn't and invoiced me only 3 weeks later for the same work they were claiming they did. Still, I now have a bill and threatening lean from them for $689 for work they never did.

Sometimes "playing plumber" doesn't work and you need a professional! Highly recommend John J Cahill of Evanston! Reliable! Trustworthy! And reasonably priced! (Yes, that's a tampon applicator that was flushed and wedged in the workings of the toilet!) - please visitors, only flush toilet paper! And respect the courtesy flush!

Never again! Used Cahill for standard boiler maintenance, which included replacing the thermocouple, Dec 2019 @ cost of $350. All good. Had standard maintenance performed on the boiler again Jan 2021, again included replacing the thermocouple. This time the cost was $518! Less than 3 months later, we didn't have any heat. To have a Cahill service person come out it would be a brand new call and charge - even if it was the thermocouple that was just replaced 3 months earlier. CAHILL ONLY COVERS THEIR LABOR FOR 30 DAYS! Insane!
I used a competitor and sure enough it was the thermocouple. There are way too many other options in the market than to go with this one who is not only one of the costliest but also doesn't stand behind their work.

Critical: Value Highway robbery! Charged $98.00 just to come out then $228.00 PER HOUR for the plumber. Of course they didn't have the right part so had to come out again. Charged $85.00 for the second trip out plus $228.00 PER HOUR for the plumber. Buyer beware! They've got a lot of nerve. Service: Plumbing leak detection

John J. Cahill Plumbing, Heating and Cooling has been in business for three generations and I know why. My business required an extensive plumbing project. Their plumbers walked me through the proposed project, explained in layman terms what needed to be done and why, and provided estimated costs for each project phase. They worked on the project as per the agreement, completing the job on time despite a couple of unexpected snafus.
Their professionalism and competence were beyond reproach. Now nearly a year later, I am still a very satisfied customer, and highly recommend Cahill for your plumbing needs.

Hire them if you want the best. Their service has been great. All their plumbers are top notch. They show up when they say and leave the site fixed and in ship shape. They're especially great for vintage buildings having fixed waste stacks and pin hole supply leaks in the wall in mine. Anyone who's lived in such places knows how tricky things can be.
But their experience shows. All work was done well and done quickly. Only reason for a four star rating is their hourly rate is steep. I understand, "you get what you pay for" and they are a skilled trade. However, I'm a tax accountant and don't bill as much.

The reason I'm being so harsh, is after FIVE MINUTES fixing a leak under kitchen sink, he installed my new single handle facet in main bathroom. That took 30 minutes. But, for sure he was here less than 45 minutes! Cost for labor was $475! High school education and how many years apprenticing, I don't know. That is OUTRAGEOUS

We have been Cahill customers for over 40 years and have always found them to be professional, efficient, friendly and fair. Not the cheapest, but worth it. Most recently we had a leaking cast iron drain plug. The plumber came very promptly and provided two repair options. I am very happy with the repair and will always recommend Cahill.

The plumbers themselves are great. Friendly, professional, and they get the job done. It's everything else that hurts their operation. They fail to schedule and send plumbers at the right time; bill incorrectly and unexpectedly, then threaten to send you to collections; incredibly unresponsive; lie with impunity. Wish the plumbers ran the whole show!

Shocked, disappointed, and angry - that's how we'd describe our recent experience with Cahill plumbing. We called with a leaky faucet - we've been good customers, and have used them for years. The plumbers always do good work. It seemed a little odd when they sent out TWO PLUMBERS for such a small job. Our initial concern was: do they plan on double-billing us?
During the brief assessment, the TWO PLUMBERS recommended that we replace both faucets in the double bathroom sink. We agreed, and to keep costs down, we went and purchased the faucets ourselves. We set up a time for faucet installation a few days later. The same TWO PLUMBERS appeared to do the work, which took approximately 1.5 hours. Faucets work great.
Then - we got the bill. We were billed for the original trip charge - which we expected. But then we were also billed for a RETURN trip charge. It would seem to me that in the initial visit, where an assessment and recommendation were provided, and no other work done, that the original trip charge would extend to the follow-up visit to install the faucets (a few days later). Also, we were billed for TWO PLUMBERS faucet installation.
What started out as a leaky faucet turned into a bill for $1,200.00. And the worst part? Calling Cahill to discuss it. Spoke with John Cahill - the owner of the company. He was unsympathetic, rude, and HUNG UP ON ME. As a business owner, I would NEVER treat a customer that way. This is not on the plumbers - they did their job. This is on the owner. This is no way to run a business - nor how to treat loyal customers. We will never use them again.

We called for emergency service on a Sunday and were encouraged to wait until the next day and told we would be prioritized. We were given a 12-4pm service window. They didn't meet that service time and will now be charging us overtime. Such a failure and very unfair. If they couldn't service us, we would have called another company. Very disappointed. Previously loyal customer lost forever.

Beautifully! The plumber (on schedule) came to fix the problem. He suggested that we purchase our own new faucet, so that we could choose a style we liked most. When we had the part in hand, we called to set a time for installation. We had no problem setting a convenient time. On the day of the installation, the plumber had said when he would come ("between 10 and 2").
Early in the afternoon he called to say hi might be a bit late, as another job was running longer than expected. He called when he was on his way--still within the original time schedule. He did the job in a neat, orderly manner. When he was done he cleaned up, including taking away the old part and the box from the new part, and explained the manufacturer's warranty. We paid him by check, and he left. The faucet is now working fine.

John Cahill spoke with us several times about tree roots and rodding through our basin. There were a few concerns but we were going to start with rodding and hopefully not have to get to the expensive $7k option. The rodding itself would cost about $600. If we needed to do the $7k option we would only have to pay for labor. Well guess what - the rodding worked - WONDERFUL.
And then all of a sudden i get a $1065 bill. 2 guys for 2.5 hours and a $65 machine. these guys make $250/hour? I DON'T THINK SO. He completely changed the price on the spot because there was no more lucrative $7k option. I should have listened to the other reviewers that described this price gauging. I went local business to support Evanston but experiences like this will make me turn him away in the future and not recommend him to anyone. I never review but was so angry after this experience, felt it was necessary to save others the time and energy. This type of unfair pricing scheme is never acceptable.

.DO NOT hire this plumbing company. John J. Is rude, nasty, and it took numerous contacts to him for a permit to be pulled and and over 3 weeks to get an inspection of a hot water heater he installed for my condo. The entire experience was horrible and he just doesn't act professionally in any way. His company was established years ago but that means little to the consumer now.
I have never encountered a contractor who has such difficulty getting a permit, complains about its cost and "$40 for parking downtown" REALLY? If it wasn't so sad, it would be laughable. The permit he pulled cost all of $75. So, if you want to have a totally aggravating experience for something as simple as a hot water heater replacement hire this guy. If you want something else, look for a reputable plumbing company., NOT THIS ONE. EVER.

I called them to see if they could do some minor tile work, I sent them pictures to save them a trip. Kristi Cahill gave a written quote and said the job looks routine. There motto seems to be "we've been around a long time". Another representative named Randy Hunt followed up 2 weeks later, said the job was easy as well, BUT upped they price by 35% due to "logistics". Long story short, I had the total job done with supplies by another contractor for a total of 40% of their price= STAY AWAY!

Cahill was recommended due to their expertise in our buildings quirks. The work of the guys at our place was good as usual but we had some office issues that were uncharacteristic. Appointment confusion and poor communication this time around but the guys did quality work. UPDATE: you were super nice and made an adjustment that was fair.

John J Cahill saved me on one of the most hottest and humid days of the year. They came over and cleaned my condensing unit outside and checked freon levels which did the trick. The technician said I should call for a clean and check every season to prevent a build up of dust and those cottonwood floaty things.

About two weeks ago I had the sewer rodded. The two men who did the job were thorough in breaking through to the street. They took their time to thoroughly clear out every obstruction. And yesterday I had the ejector pump and two water-valves replaced. The two plumbers who did this work did so efficiently and effectively. I am very satisfied by the competence and honesty of the people who work for John J. Cahill.

It have been a Cahill customer for 20 years.but no more! They have always been expensive but my last experience was the last straw. I needed a part for a faucet that Cahill had installed in 2001. I sent the vendor name and address and indicated the exact faucet for which I needed the part. After sending many pictures, I was told that a plumber needed to come to my house ($95) to dismantle my good faucet to measure the stem (part that I needed) and reassemble the faucet at $180/hour! What! I found the faucet on the vendor website and ordered the replacement myself. Why couldn't Cahill do this? Who knows.but they have lost a loyal customer.

Do not under any circumstances hire Cahill! Hired them to fix a broken toilet. They said it was fixed and charged me $150. Two days later the toilet is broken and I had to hire someone else and spend another $100 to fix. And when I complained to Cahill they blamed me, the customer, and refused to make it right. They are unprofessional and rude. Never again.

I have used Cahill for the past thirteen years but won't again. They charge $95 for the call and $46.50 for every 15 minute increment. We were charged 30 minutes which included the time the plumber took to write up the visit, in his truck! Plus it was more like 20 minutes even with the trip to his truck. When we questioned him about it, he told us that Mr. Cahill said they had to write everything up in the truck. He was not even apologetic about this. It is a terrible policy and non-existent customer service.
